Village Trips
Village trips are conducted every Sunday. There are 2 types of trips:
On our main supply/medical trip we take interested individuals and groups to extremely poor villages about 1 hour drive away (50kms) South East of Phnom Penh city. Currently we support about 170+ village families living in huts, with an average of about 5/6 persons per hut. They have no land, electricity, sanitation, jobs, safe drinking water or any other support. They have either lost their land or never had any in the first place, so they are now just squatting on the side of a dusty road. Most children do not attend school and even the few who do, have no uniforms. CHOICE provide entertainment for the children eg. a clown does magic, juggling, balloon tying.
On the other alternate Sunday trip we take volunteers to the same Villages where you can spend more time with the children and help them with either English education, drawing, painting, craftwork, games, singing or entertaining. If you like you can bring your own ideas to our team leaders.
CHOICE is helping as much as possible with Village maintenance and parcels of necessary supplies to these families on each alternate Sunday’s supply visit. Parcels contain rice, iodized salts, toothpaste, toothbrushes, washing detergents, soap, canned fish, sauce, noodles etc. we also provide secondhand clothing, toys and footwear. A medical clinic is conducted on every supply trip, on average 40 people are treated at a cost of US$40 – $50. Severe cases are brought back to Phnom Penh for further treatment. Formulae milk powder plus safe drinking water to mix it with, is given to mothers as a supplement to those who are having difficulty feeding twins, or those who are unable to breast feed their babies at all. The cost for CHOICE of each supply trip is over US$350 this does not include the costs of clothing, footwear, hospitalization, filters, mosquito nets. We have already provided more than half the villagers with water filters and all the Villages with mosquito nets. Unfortunately their drinking water comes from the several tube wells in the villages which are contaminated with life threatening natural toxins such as arsenic and manganite, as the normal filters will not remove these, we are trying to find a suitable way to eliminate these toxins.
Our future plans and with sufficient funds, we have tried building a school in the Village but this was not allowed. If we had sufficient funds perhaps we could provide transport to take them to and from school, we need to find a better way than the temporary schools we run at the moment. There are about 400 children in the village’s and most do not attend a proper school. We would also like to provide the villages with work, better water filters and more mosquito nets and some type of sanitation system.
